Barnsley boxer Andy Townend has been given a slot on the undercard of Anthony Joshua's world heavyweight title fight next month.

The 28-year-old – who came through at Cudworth club Hard and Fast – is set to go to Cardiff for the Sky-televised Joshua bill on March 31.He is due to take on highly-rated Welshman Joe Cordina – who competed at the Rio Olympics in 2016 then has won all six of his professional contests – for the vacant WBA lightweight international title which used to be held by Amir Khan.

Townend has won 13 of his last 14 bouts, with the only defeat in that run coming against Martin J Ward in a British title fight in 2016.Since beating Jon Kays at Bramall Lane last May but missing out on the Commonwealth title as he did not make the weight, he has fought only once in the last nine months.

After Townend's fight, Joshua is due to face Joseph Parker in one of the biggest events of the year so far.
