THINGS have gone all high tech at Barnsley Model Railway Club, with real steam pumping from locomotives, lights flashing in the carriages and horns sounding.

The club held its annual two-day show at Hoyland Leisure Centre at the weekend and showed a selection of rail 'layouts' that thrilled adults as well as children.

Secretary Danny Kaye said enthusiasts had now progressed to using Wi-Fi and mobile phones to control the trains. But they still got creative when it came to crafting landscape effects.

"I know one chap who does amazing things with those white polystyrene pizza bases. He can make 'stone and brick' walls and cobbled streets out of them."

Barnsley Model Railway Club started in 1956. It meets every Tuesday from 7.30pm at Highstone Road, Worsbrough. It has 36 adult members and a growing junior membership. For more information visit www.barnsleymrc.org.uk
