A POIGNANT request has made a community task more than worthwhile.

While a team of volunteers were working on Kexbrough community garden, a lady asked for a rhododendron to be planted in her husband’s memory.

It is now hoped other people will come forward with their own tributes for the communal area.

Students from Darton Academy, with the support of Twiggs, Darton West Ward Alliance and Kexbrough post office have continued work on the Community and Memorial Garden.

Post office staff have been raising money for the garden from their customers and have supplied rose bushes, winter flowers and three new benches which are now in place for people to use.

Bluebell and tulip bulbs were also planted - ready for next spring.

Academy spokesman Jason Gardner said: “Residents of Kexbrough will now be able to sit and enjoy the garden as well as help to maintain and add tributes to loved ones they have lost.

“While we were working on the garden, a resident who had sadly lost her husband at the start of the year called by and asked us to plant a rhododendron along with a plaque in his memory. This was something that made it all worthwhile.

“We hope other residents who wish to do the same will now come forward and have their own tributes planted.”
