TRIBUTES from across the world have been flooding in following the death of Harry Leslie Smith.

Harry, 95, was a Barnsley-born war veteran who was admitted into hospital in Canada on Tuesday November 20, battling a severe case of pneumonia.

He died in the early hours of this morning, with the news announced on his Twitter account by his son, John.

Harry became a worldwide sensation after launching a campaign to travel to as many refugee hot spots as possible in Europe, North America and possibly Australia to document people who are living in refugee camps.

He also spoke about the NHS and austerity, a talk which led to a standing ovation at the Labour Party conference in 2014.

Stephanie Peacock is one of many who are paying tribute to him. She wrote on Twitter: “More

So sad to hear about the passing of Harry Leslie Smith, a true Barnsley hero who dedicated his life to campaigning for working people here and around the country. My thoughts are with his family.”
