A FORMER police officer and Barnsley fan known as one of the fairest bobbies to work matchdays has died, aged 64.

Martin Colman was a well-known PC in Barnsley, leading the police patrol at Oakwell on home matches.

Once he hung up his hat and truncheon, Martin got into the film memorabilia business – operating Mustave Autographs and Collectables from his home in Staincross.

Martin’s widow Chrissie said: “For all we are putting him to rest and grieving that day, we look forward to celebrating his life when the coronavirus is over. Everyone who knew him will be welcome.”

Ex-Red Bruce Dyer got to know Martin – also Barnsley Rotary Club president – in 1998 when he signed for Barnsley.

He raised funds for Bruce’s Love Life UK Church by donating an England shirt signed by World Cup hero Geoff Hurst.

Bruce said: “Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family at this difficult time.”

Martin was memorably behind a campaign to get Reds fans to wear flat caps as they went to Wembley to face Oxford in the 2016 Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final.
