A truckstop diner has been raided by thieves who got away with goods and equipment worth more than £2,500.

Owner of the Shortwood Diner, Gary Bottom, said the thieves even took his griddle - that he uses to cook truckers' breakfasts on - along with pies, soft drinks and charity boxes for Afghan Heroes and Barnsley Hospice.

The thieves got in by ripping a panel off the back of the diner, which seats 14 people is in a container parked up on the side of the Dearne Valley Parkway near Platts Common roundabout, and also stole collectable ornaments of buses and VWs.

Gary, 56, of George Street, Hoyland, set up the diner almost 12 months ago but has already been targeted previously by thieves who stole cables and gas bottles.

He said he was not insured and it had cost him £1,000 to secure the premises after the latest raid on October 29.

"It has caused mayhem," he said. "I have always wanted to run a diner and I finally did it and now I'm being kicked in the teeth."
