TWO people were taken to hospital following a gas explosion at a newsagent’s shop in Mexborough.

Emergency services were called to the shop on Hirst Gate at the junction with Doncaster Road at 11.20am yesterday.

Two people were inside the shop and three people were in the flat above.

All were outside when the fire service arrived and the injuries are not thought to be serious.

Four fire engines from Dearne, Doncaster and Rotherham attended the scene and Hirst Gate and Doncaster Road were cordoned off.

Doncaster Road was later reopened one way but Hirst Gate remained closed.

A spokesman for the fire service said there will be an investigation into the cause of the fire and explosion.
