Ike Ugbo came on to net both goals as Barnsley continued their pre-season preparations with a 2-0 win at League One Rochdale.

Dale, managed by former Reds boss Keith Hill, dominated the first half with visiting goalkeeper Nick Townsend making a string of fine saves. But the Reds made key substitutions including the teenager on loan from Chelsea who opened the scoring midway through the second half before securing the win in the last minute.

Paul Heckingbottom rested several of his first team regulars with Adam Davies, Andy Yiadom, Angus MacDonald and George Moncur all starting on the bench.

The head coach's main concern will be an injury to Liam Lindsay who limped off just before the break and was replaced by Ethan Pinnock. Rochdale had the better of the first half as Townsend twice denied Ian Henderson and also tipped over a long-range Callum Camps.

Barnsley's first chance came in the 43rd minute when Tom Bradshaw fired over from outside the box then the same player sent a header over the bar before the break.Yiadom, MacDonald and Moncur were brought on at the break.

Rochdale had the ball in the back of the net but Calvin Andrew was penalised for controlling it with his arm before firing in. It was Barnsley who took the lead when Ugo tapped in from a couple of yards out when Bradshaw's header from Lloyd Isgrove's cross was spilled by Josh Lillis.

The Rochdale goalkeeper then made several saves from substitute Alex Mowatt including a fine one-on-one stop.Igbo got the second in the last-minute with a superb burst of pace to latch onto George Moncur's throughball, round the goalkeeper and tap into the empty net.
