MEMBERS of a trade union were shocked to hear strikers at a primary school had been accused of behaving in a threatening way.

A report was given at the Barnsley Trades Union Council (BTUC) meeting about dinner ladies on strike at Ladywood Primary school in Grimethorpe.

The members were shocked to hear the lowest paid workers in the school are facing redundancy at Christmas to solve the school’s budget problems, and that the picketers had been accused of behaving threateningly.

George Arthur, BTUC secretary said: “Each time I have been to the picket line I’ve been impressed by the good humour and exemplary behaviour of the women on strike.

“I felt quite happy taking my two-year-old granddaughter along.

“I have not seen any examples of anyone being threatened in any way. Anne Scargill arrived one day and complimented the picketers on their attitude and behaviour.”

The BTUC meeting agreed to call a support rally at the school at 8am tonight (Monday).
