RESIDENTS reporting issues with horses escaping their enclosure in Brierley will receive an update from both police and council bosses next week.

The horses, allegedly owned by travellers, have ventured out onto busy roads several times in recent months and damaged cars.

Police began an ‘evidence-gathering’ process alongside Barnsley Council - which saw locals meet with Barnsley Council leader Coun Sir Steve Houghton and local officers last month - and Sergeant Richard Wilson is set to provide an update at a crime meeting which will be held in Grimethorpe on Tuesday.

A wrangle over the horses’ ownership broke out last year which led to community protection notices (CPNs) being issued to two suspected owners.

He said: “It’s been a major topic recently but plenty of progress has been made to get this under control. We’ve had less reports recently - we had one recently but that was the first in a while - at its worst we were getting two or three per day.”
