PENISTONE'S landmark market barn has been made the area's major police priority for the summer due to sustained problems involving vandalism and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Incidents have included one of the glass panels being smashed, with a replacement cost estimated between £1,000 and £2,000, and another where youngsters climbed onto the roof and started throwing slates down.

Beyond those, there have been other incidents of damage to the building and youth nuisance issues with teenagers using the barn and surrounding area as a meeting point.

They have frequently left rubbish behind and have used the building as an informal area for bicycle and skateboard stunts, building ramps.

** The full meeting appears in the Barnsley Chronicle newspaper, dated July 17. **
