A DEDICATED drop-in centre to help armed forces veterans is being set up in Barnsley.

Former sergeant major Gavin Felton, and fellow veteran Tony Sykes, are the brains behind the idea which will help military veterans access things such as housing, employment, psychological and medical support.

Mr Felton, who served 24 years in the Army, felt compelled to help after speaking to homeless veterans living on the streets. He travelled to Leeds, Manchester and London to see for himself the scale of the issue of homelessness, a problem he has called ‘a national disgrace’.

He was so moved by those he spoke to he wanted to create a drop-in centre in his hometown that would give vital support to those who were willing to pull on a uniform and fight for their country.

Mr Felton, 47, is hoping to secure premises for the centre within the next four weeks.
