MAYOR of Barnsley Coun Steve Green revealed a fine voice when he let rip on the karaoke at an event to thank local volunteers.

The new mayor performed a duet at the Stairfoot Social with Hilda Booth, of Bank Street Environmental Group, belting-out Meatloaf’s rock classic Paradise By The Dashboard Light on Tuesday night.

The video was shared on the Stairfoot Ward Alliance Facebook page.

The event was held at the Keel Inn on Tuesday, organised by the Stairfoot Ward Alliance. It was intended to be a get together for local people and to celebrate the work of various voluntary groups in the area, and the mayor had agreed to attend to meet and speak to the volunteers as the theme of his mayoral year is ‘supporting volunteers’.

“What a fantastic night it was,” said Coun Wayne Johnson, who also had a sing, as did former councillor and former mayor Brian Mathers, and Vicar of Ardsley Rev Fiona Kouble.

“Steve came and spoke to every volunteer, and then he did a bit of a speech at the end.

“I’d already told him there was going to be a karaoke, and he told everyone he would have got up and sung, but he didn’t have a singing partner.

“Well he’d really put his foot in it, because Hilda’s a great singer and she got straight up. He was absolutely brilliant. People loved it.

“Joking apart, the impression he left with the people that were there was just amazing, they thought he was brilliant.

“It really was pretty awesome, people were saying ‘what a guy’ and ‘man of the people’, because he’d taken that time out to speak to all the volunteers, and I think they really appreciated it.

“Getting up and singing with his chain on like that, it just made the night.”
