VILLAGE centres including Cudworth, Grimethorpe and Royston could be boosted by schemes worth up to £100,000 each as a knock-on effect of Barnsley town centre’s regeneration work.

The three have been earmarked as ‘principal towns’ and are set to benefit from a £5m fund, which will be spent over the next three years, after Barnsley Council’s cabinet members approved an initiative to improve out-of-town shopping centres.

Projects could see improvements being carried out to boost each centre’s appearance, while new signage and car parking could also be commissioned, kick-starting wider investment across local high streets to make sure the benefits of economic regeneration are felt across the borough.

The programme, expected to start in April, will work with local business leaders and community organisations to help shape and deliver projects focussed on developing a bustling high street to bring about ‘strong and resilient communities’.
