GRANT funding of £2m has been accepted by Barnsley Council’s ruling cabinet members which will enable the delivery of 311 new homes in Thurnscoe.

The funding is coming from the government’s Housing Infrastructure Fund (HIF), which dedicated £5.5 billion to fund local infrastructure projects such as new roads and land remediation works which are essential for helping to build new homes.

Between 2011 and 2015, 160 new homes were built at The Seasons, now Willow Heights, Thurnscoe, as part of phase one for the housing development, before the scheme stalled due to the economic downturn.

In 2018 work was able to restart on the site in the form of phase two, helping to build an extra 129 homes, and the council found out last spring that it had been successful in its bid to the HIF to secure the final phase of the development.

Matt Gladstone, executive director of place, said: “We are working hard to speed up housing growth across the borough. This significant investment from the HIF will help us to complete regeneration activity and increase housing value and confidence in the area.

“As part of our local plan, we aim to provide better housing to meet current and future needs in the borough with the creation of over 21,0000 new homes.

“This includes homes for sale on the open market, affordable housing and housing to meet the needs of our older and vulnerable communities.”
