VIOLENCE erupted at a town centre night club when a bouncer and a lad celebrating his 18th birthday were among ten people injured - five needing hospital treatment.

Adam Royston said he was knocked unconscious when he was hit on the back of the head and then stamped on while on the ground.

He said it began when one of his friends asked a stranger in another group if he could borrow a lighter, and was then hit. Adam tried to intervene but was then attacked himself.

“All I can remember is being in Che Bar, then waking up in Barnsley Hospital,” said Adam, 18, of Oak Road, Wath.

“I think I was pretty lucky if you were to see what happened to the bouncers, they ended up in a right state.

"I don't even remember being hit, I don't remember being stamped on, and I don't remember seeing anybody being hit.  All I know is what I've been told, and apparently I got hit on the back on the head, and I went straight down.

"I've never been in a fight before in my life."

Adam issued an appeal on Facebook to track down two student nurses who gave him first aid before the ambulance arrived. They kept talking to me, and apparently all I wanted to do is go to sleep.

"All I can think is that if they’d let me go to sleep, I might not have woken up, so I just can’t thank them enough.”

His post was shared hundreds of times, and Sarah Hill, who did some nursing training before taking a career change, came forward, and has been thanked by Adam and his mum, Helen.

Sarah told the Chronicle: “I didn’t actually see what happened. We were on our way out when I saw one of the bouncers coming back in, covered in blood, and I think he ended up needing a few stitches.

“There were punches being flown outside, so I went back in and that’s when I saw Adam out cold on the floor. He was unconscious. I just put him in the recovery position, as there’s not much more you can do.

“He started to come round after about four minutes, so I just kept taking to him to try and stop him going to sleep.

“I only did what I’d like to think anyone would do.”

A spokesman for Che Bar said: “We are aware of an incident taking place outside Che Bar on Peel Street, and are working very closely with police regarding this.”

A police spokesman said: “We understand that around ten people were injured following the disturbance and assault at Che Bar in Peel Street, which was reported at around 2.40am on Saturday.

“Of those ten people, five were taken to hospital to receive treatment for what are thought to be minor injuries. Enquiries are ongoing into the incident and police are keen to hear from any witnesses – call 101 or email enquiries@southyorks.pnn.police.uk quoting incident number 163 of 24 June 24.”
