A VISUALLY impaired Barnsley FC fan is to embark on a cycling journey like no other as he travels 76 miles from Oakwell to Goodison Park to raise money for Goalball UK - the registered charity for the sport for blind and partially sighted people.

Phil Green will start his journey on August 6 as he attempts to pedal the entire distance in one day, venturing across steep sections of the Peak District before arriving in Liverpool.

He will be guided by Kathryn Fielding, an Everton fan, who has helped coach visually impaired people in sport for over 16 years.

This isn’t the first time Phil has put his body through the paces, as he has completed a number of triathlons, the York Marathon three times and is currently training for Iron Man next year.

Phil said: “I have a rare hereditary eye condition which means my sight is already very limited and will deteriorate over time.

“I want to make the most of what vision I have until I eventually lose it.

“This inspires me every day to keep pushing myself, taking on new challenges and to carry on doing what I love.

“Goalball UK has had such a massive impact on my life, this is why I want to give something back.

“Being welcomed into the goalball community, full of visually impaired people like myself, gave me so much confidence and the belief that I could do challenges like this.”
