A VOLUNTEER car scheme could be introduced in the Penistone district to help plug the gaps left by a diminishing public transport service in the area - but questions still remain over how it would be funded.

Councillors, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive and other bodies have been in discussions about a scheme using volunteer drivers to take passengers on journeys they would otherwise struggle to make.

But one initial idea, to broaden a scheme used by Yorkshire Ambulance Service to get patients to hospital appointments, has been ruled out after that service showed a reluctance to get involved.

Another option is that Barnsley’s Dial A Ride service could also be involved, but South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive are not yet clear about whether they would put any money into the project.
