VOLUNTEERS in Great and Little Houghton have got stuck into cleaning up.

In Great Houghton, the operation was so successful it has led to a new monthly litter picking scheme.

Councillors Dorothy Higginbottom, Jeff Ennis and Allan Hampson took part with residents and members of the North East Ward Alliance, collecting 35 bags of rubbish. The event was supported by the North East Environment Team.

Coun Higginbottom said: “It was an excellent turn out, with people from the walkingclub and rotary club pitching in to help out. I can’t tell you how pleased I am to have seen the community come together to help out. Now there will be meetings at the Welfare Hall the first Monday of every month at 10am to tidy up.”
