A GROUP which has helped hundreds of workers claim compensation for mining related injuries has been nominated for a Proud of Barnsley award.
The Help Advice Volunteers Service (HAVS) was set up in 2004 by former miner Michael White along with Bill Squires, Jim Ryan and Tony Harnett.
The group has helped many miners claim compensation for industrial diseases related to working underground, as well as other people who have suffered an industrial disease caused by their occupation.
Michael, who worked at Houghton Main for 30 years, said: "We've helped all kinds of people: miners, council workers, women, construction workers. I started the group in 2004 and people still come to us for help and advice and we advise them of the right place to go."
The group has been nominated by Keith Elvin, a former miner who was helped by the group.
In his nomination, Keith said: "These unsung heroes are a credit to the town for their persistency in correcting decisions made by the Department for Work and Pensions."
