VOLUNTEERS are working hard to keep the grounds at Wentworth Castle Gardens in good order, since the attraction closed to the public three months ago.

The Stainborough tourist attraction shut at Easter with the trust responsible for managing the site saying it wasn’t making enough money to keep the gardens open.

The Chronicle was sent photographs by a dog walker concered that parts of the grounds in front of the house were being left to ‘go to seed’ following the closure.

But John Edwards, chairman of the Wentworth Castle and Stainborough Park Heritage Trust, has allayed fears it is being allowed to fall into disrepair.

“The grounds and gardens are currently being maintained by a small team of gardeners, supported by the Wentworth Castle Volunteers Association," he said.

“The decorative gardens and main areas are being regularly planted, weeded and trimmed. Surrounding areas of parkland including the grass in front of the house are meadows, home to a wide range of wildflowers, grasses and wildlife - such areas are deliberately left to grow during the spring and summer months to allow the habitats to flourish.”

He said the trust is reviewing the garden maintenance schedule for October onwards and is encouraging anyone interested in volunteering to get in touch by emailing wcva2017@gmail.com or visiting the Facebook page for Wentworth Castle Volunteers Association.
