THE Barnsley Chronicle and McDonald's have teamed up to help 'Keep Barnsley Tidy'.

Volunteers from Barnsley's McDonald's restaurants will be taking part in a 'big clean' this summer and will focus their attention on a particular area chosen by Barnsley Chronicle readers.

The fast food giant contacted the Chronicle following our coverage of the fly tipping epidemic across Barnsley earlier this year - including a front page feature in January which included 38 photographs of fly tipping across the borough.

The search is now on for the most-deserving and most-in need spot in Barnsley to benefit from a major tidy by McDonald's volunteers. The Keep Barnsley Tidy campaign calls for local residents' help in deciding on which spot needs assistance and to come along on the day and help reclaim their neighbourhoods of litter.

Barnsley Chronicle deputy editor Steph Daley said: "It is good to see McDonald's come forward to help tackle the issue of littering in Barnsley with manpower to clear it up. Now we want to hear from local people to find out where they think the worst hotspot is."

McDonald's area manager Matt Barker said: "To win the war on litter everyone needs to work together, with businesses having an exciting part to play. McDonald's is committed to working with local communities to tackle litter having done so for over 30 years since introducing 'Litter Patrols' to its UK business in 1982.

"We are really pleased to be offering our support to Barnsley. Our staff are eager to get involved it's great that we can source somewhere that really needs help and hopefully make a really positive impact."

Please put forward suggested spots and any images via email to mike.cotton@barnsley-chronicle.co.uk before the end of Wednesday, July 13.
