Goalkeeper Jack Walton, 17, is seen as a future Barnsley number one after he signed his first professional contract this week.

Walton, who was the Academy Player of the Year last season and has recently trained with the England under 18s, penned a new deal until 2018.

Head coach Lee Johnson told the Chronicle: "We really like Jack. "He's a fantastic boy with a really good character and he's had a good upbringing from a nice family. He's very eager and never stops asking questions.

"He's a good size, technically good and we feel there is a chance for him to be our number one at some point. "If he continues to show a good attitude, then the world is his oyster."

Walton – who signed from Bolton two years ago – was on the bench aged 16 for the match at Bristol City in March and returned to the matchday squad on Saturday against Bradford.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old stopper Christian Dibble has been sent out on loan to Chelmsford City in the Conference South.
