THE Barnsley War Memorials Project was handed a cheque for more than £2,000 from members of the Campaign for Real Ale at a presentation under the shadow of the war memorial in front of the town hall.

Barnsley CAMRA adopted the BWMP as its good cause for 2017/18.

The sum of £2,131.47 was raised at beer festivals in May and early September through raffles and asking customers to donate their glass deposits.

There was also a sponsored walk in late September from the Wath Tap, Wath upon Dearne, to the Arcade Alehouse in Barnsley town centre, and additional money was raised at social events throughout the year.

A spokesman for the project said: “The BWMP express their gratitude for this generous contribution to the costs of the roll of honour and thank Barnsley CAMRA for all their hard work.

“A special mention must go to young member Alex Forrest who sold more than £400 worth of raffle tickets in September.”

Alex had been chatting to a members of the project who were manning a display about its work at the beer festival at Milton Hall, and said he was surprised to discover there was no Barnsley borough First World War Roll of Honour.

Similar documents can be found in Sheffield and other towns around the UK.

‘It is one of those things you just assume must exist’, Alex told the group.

The cheque was presented to Coun Ken Richardson, chairman of the BWMP.

The roll of honour will be ready for Remembrance Sunday, which this year will mark exactly 100 years since the signing of the Armistice on November 11 1918, and the end of a conflict which claimed the lives of almost 4,000 Barnsley men and women.
