CARING ward staff at Barnsley Hospital who made it possible for an elderly man to spend his final days with his beloved dog have been put forward for a Proud of Barnsley award.

John Baker, known as Jack, 86, was admitted to hospital having suffered a massive stroke at his home on The Square, off Raley Street in Barnsley, on July 30.

He spent a few days on Ward 20, but developed pneumonia and died on August 5.

Jack had never married and had no children, and was devoted to his dachshund, Perry.

During his final days, infection controls were relaxed to allow the dog into his room.

Jack’s family said it had meant the world to him. Niece Georgina Shaw said he had cried tears of happiness.

Georgina said they were initially told only guide dogs were allowed into the hospital, but nurses said they would find out if an exception to the rule could be made for Jack.

Soon after, staff contacted them to say Perry could visit.

Georgina said: “The staff deserve to win this award. What they did was above the call of duty.

“They didn’t have to do it, but it was his dying wish. He could see his dog was well looked after before he died and I think that gave him peace.”

Lead nurse Donna Hopkins said: “It’s always nice to be appreciated and we were happy to be able to give Mr Baker peace of mind in his final days.

“Our whole team was involved in his care.”
