A WARNING has been issued after a scam was uncovered in Royston.

Resident Ray Wright, of Upper Lunns Close, has urged people to be cautious if they receive a phone call or letters from a company called Frugal, whose shopping card promises people discounts at stores including Asda, Tesco, Marks and Spencer and Debenhams.

“They had my name and address and tried to get my bank details over the phone,” the 83-year-old said. “I went into Asda at Royston to check if they accepted such a thing and they weren’t aware of it at all.

“Those stores appeal to a lot of people - particularly elderly people who often shop there. I attend the village’s Darby and Joan club and the Salvation Army, so it’s about getting the word out and telling people to be cautious.”

The matter is due to be discussed by police and council bosses at the village’s next PACT meeting, on August 22.
