ABBEY Vets has warned animal lovers to be on their guard, after it treated dogs who had swallowed everything from headache tablets to a pile of loose change.

The Dodworth Road vets issued a list of the items after it had to operate on a German Shepherd who had swallowed a lollipop stick.

Five, a four-year-old German Shepherd owned by Tracy Drake from Monk Bretton, had a one-hour operation at Abbey Vets to remove the wooden lollipop stick from her stomach.

The vet issued a new list of items that had been swallowed by dogs. They are a kebab skewer, a pile of loose change, a child's snooker ball, a cocktail stick, Christmas wrapping paper, a whole box of Nurofen tablets and a large ear ring.

A spokeswoman for the vet's said: "As well as these items Abbey Vets has treated dogs that have eaten boxes of chocolate - particularly at Christmas - and Easter eggs. Chocolate is potentially life threatening to a dog."
