RESIDENTS of a Monk Bretton street have been left without water for hours at a time due to works by Yorkshire Water.

The works began six weeks ago, and are due to a suspected burst pipe.

Bob Moxon, of Norfolk Close, said his water has been turned off repeatedly since  with no explanation.

Bob, 59, said: “They could have at least put a card through the letter box saying they had turned it off and why.

“It started six weeks ago and has happened four or five times since.

“I got in from work last Friday and it was off again, and I couldn’t get in my drive.

“They offered us compensation but all I want is for it to stop.

“You come home from work in this weather and have to wait two or three hours to get a wash.”

Bob has resorted to opening the stop tap outside his house and turning his water back on himself.

Steve Taylor, 46, and Alison Hilton, 52, have had works outside their house that have left them unable to use their drive for almost a week.

Steve said: “We can’t have the car on the drive, i’m parking a bit further down the road so I’m probably inconveniencing next door, it has been a mess for a while.

“Since they came out and did the first lot of work six weeks ago we have got a humming noise in our kitchen and bathroom as if we were getting a leak, so we’re not sure what they’re doing.”

Alison added: “It’s a mess, we need to know when they will finish it because we’re left in limbo.

“We were told by Yorkshire Water that if the leak is past our drive we would have to get in touch with our insurance company.

“There seems to be a lack of communication between Yorkshire Water and the contractors.”

A spokesman for Yorkshire Water said: “We have been working to fix a burst pipe in Norfolk Close, Barnsley.

“Unfortunately the leak has been more complex than first thought so the work has taken longer than expected.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused and will communicate with customers to ensure they have all relevant information.

“Fixing leaks is a priority for us and we have trebled the number of teams in the field fixing them.”

The issue follows other problems in the same area of Monk Bretton, which has affected trade at the working men’s club on Cross Street, caused by work on the sewer system.

Club president Les Price, 53, said: “There were three occasions in 12 months where they were doing work outside and we couldn’t get vehicles in, it’s been horrendous.

“There are actually some markings on the road at the minute so they might be coming back soon.

“At least come in and tell us so we can tell our customers.”
