Daniel Stendel is disappointed that Barnsley have dropped out of League One’s top six but believes they will get back into the play-off places if they continue to play as they did in the 1-1 draw with leaders Portsmouth.

The Reds’ draw and a win for local rivals Doncaster Rovers meant Barnsley slipped out of the top six for the first time this season.

Stendel said: “We have 25 games left, but it is not the best that we are out of the top six. We can only play with the same attitude and passion as today and get back into the top six.

“It was a good performance. Our plan against Portsmouth was good. Most of the time, we did what we said we wanted to do. The only point I am not satisfied with is that we didn’t win. We are always disappointed when we don’t win, even if it is against top of the league.”

Barnsley forced several saves out of Craig McGillivray with most of the shots straight at the visiting goalkeeper. Stendel said: “We wanted to shoot a lot, that was our plan to shoot from long range. But our shots were too close to the goalkeeper. His performance was good but some of the saves were too easy because the shots were not in the corners.”

Stendel took right-back Dimitri Cavare off at half-time for Jacob Brown. The coach said: “I was not satisfied with his performance. It is not a big problem but I thought we were better in the second half and in the next game, maybe we will change again.”

Cauley Woodrow, who netted the equaliser, was pleased to salvage a point but thought the Reds should have taken all three. The striker said: “We should have won the game. We put in a good performance. We battered them in the first half, we should have scored a few but conceded a goal we shouldn’t have conceded. We managed to get ourselves back into the game and, considering we were 1-0 down, we will take the draw.

“It is always nice to score, but especially after I had a couple of chances in the first half. Their goalkeeper made a couple of good saves and they might have gone in on another day. I am happy to be getting chances because I like to think that, if I do get chances, I will score goals.”
