Daniel Stendel is targeting the third round of the FA Cup at least after Barnsley thrashed Notts County 4-0 at home to Oakwell in the first round.

The Reds were held for the first half by the League Two strugglers but ran riot in the second half and could have scored several more. The head coach told the Chronicle: “I am happy with the performance. It is not easy when you are the favourite. In the first half you could tell it was not a league game but the attitude in the second half was very good.

“We had to be patient in the first half then in the second half it was good to score two early and we showed what we can do and created a lot of chances. Four goals is good and maybe we could have scored eight. In the end we got what we wanted which was to get to the next round.”

The second round draw is on BBC 2 from 7pm on Monday. Stendel said: “We hope for a long run. The last two years Barnsley started in the third round (because they were in the Championship) and that is the minimum we want to achieve this season.”

Cauley Woodrow and Zeki Fryers scored the first two goals early in the second half after coming back from injury which had prevented them each playing at all this season until the last week.

Stendel said: “For both players it was great. It is a reward for their work during the time they were injured. For Cauley we hope he can play 90 minutes in the next game. Every game we will up his game time. It is good for his self confidence that he scored. A lot of players were fit to play today so it was not easy to pick a team which is a good situation for a manager.”

Fryers added: “It was a brilliant day. I was delighted with the win and the lads did well. The cup games have come at a good time for me. It’s hard to change winning side in the league so this has given me a chance to play.

“I have been playing centre-back so, when I was left-back, I could go forward more. I decided to carry on on my run and luckily got the goal. I am hoping I can continue that in other games.

"Me and Cauley joked before that we are both back and we both scored so that was nice."
