A TEAM of volunteers organised an impromptu Brexit survey on a Barnsley high street.

The 20-strong group rounded up by People’s Vote South West Yorkshire asked shoppers on Wombwell High Street to vote as if they were MPs on the question of Brexit.

Chairman of People’s Vote South West Yorkshire, Louise Houghton, said: “We discovered last week that South Yorkshire is now one of the most deprived regions in the EU. As such it would be eligible for millions in regeneration funding if we remain.

“In this area we've already suffered years of poor treatment from the Tory government, with the closure of the pits and the more recent years of austerity. We didn't vote to be poorer and lose our livelihoods all over again.

“We voted to take back control, but it looks like this was all just a ploy to hand control to the Tory rich boys in London.”

The majority of around 100 passers-by surveyed went with a ‘no deal’ Brexit - although a similar number of responses opted to cancel Article 50 and remain in the EU.

Louise said this showed an overwhelming number of people ‘just want this to stop - whatever they voted for’ - shown in the fact that only ten per cent of people surveyed would choose to renegotiate a deal or hold a ‘people’s vote’.
