A REVIEW of welfare support in Barnsley aims to make sure people get help when they need it at the same time as saving £200,000 from the service.

In a report to Barnsley Council's ruling cabinet on Wednesday, members were told that in the next few months the council is reviewing how welfare support services are delivered across the borough.

Cuts to the council's budget over the last four years, totalling almost £60m, along with welfare reform, have had a significant impact on residents. The review, costing £20,000, will help to inform a decision on a future model for the provision of welfare rights and advice - a service which needs to save about £200,000 in the third phase of council cuts.

Coun Jenny Platts, cabinet spokeswoman for communities, said: "This, together with reduced budgets for welfare advice and support, means we need to deliver the most effective service possible, within the resources available, which will be identified through the review."
