ENGLAND'S largest privately owned home Wentworth Woodhouse has finally been sold safeguarding it for the future following years of uncertainty and decline.

Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT) has this week confirmed it has bought the house, its outstanding collection of classical statues and 83 acres in the grounds for £7m.

It follows a grant of £3.5m from the National Heritage Memorial Fund to the WWPT, which formed the final piece of the financial jigsaw needed to purchase the property.

But about £42m is thought to be needed to complete full restoration of the property, and there will now be a public appeal to help raise money towards this cost.

The Chancellor of the Exchequer Philip Hammond announced £7.6m for repairs at the house in his autumn statement, which will enable work to start this year.
