Cauley Woodrow netted twice in six minutes midway through the first half then, after the break, Bambo Diaby scored an own goal before the hosts levelled with eight minutes left. The Reds are still bottom of the Championship while they have not won in 12 matches.
Caretaker manager Adam Murray made one change from the side that drew 1-1 at home to Swansea City three days earlier as Mads Andersen replaced the injured Aapo Halme at centre-back.
The Reds were outstanding in the first half, soaking up a lot of pressure and restricting their hosts to barely any chances while scoring two fine goals at the other end.
The opener came in the 18th minute when right wing-back Dimitri Cavare skipped past two defenders on the flank and floated in an excellent cross which was superbly headed in by Woodrow ten yards out.
Six minutes later it was 2-0 when another good passing move, this time down the left wing, led to Alex Mowatt finding Woodrow who fired in an excellent shot into the bottom left corner from outside the box.
The goals were his fourth and fifth of the season and meant he had netted more away from home than his side had previously managed throughout the campaign.
The hosts’ first shot came in first half injury-time when Grady Diagana’s effort from just outside the box on the right was touched wide by Brad Collins when it may have been off target anyway.
Home manager Slaven Bilic made two changes at half-time and, although the hosts were improved, Barnsley also had more chances.
Woodrow tried to score a spectacular hat-trick goal with a volley from 25 yards out when he had Conor Chaplin free on the right side of the penalty area. Woodrow came even closer to a third in the 55th minute when, after another good run and cross by Cavare, he struck the crossbar with a looping header before Mowatt fired the rebound wide. Collins dropped a routine cross but reacted well as he blocked the ball at the feet of Filip Krovinovic. The hosts eventually netted midway through the second half when Diaby headed in right-wing corner from two yards out at the near post.
Charlie Austin almost levelled with ten minutes left when, after good work by Jake Livermore and Pereira, he curled wide of the top right corner from 15 yards out. Substitute Hal Robson-Kanu then fired badly over after meeting a Conor Townsend cross at an awkward height eight yards out.
The equaliser came in the 82nd minute when Townsend’s cross was headed home from eight yards out by Pereira who had got in between Andersen and Toby Sibbick.
