Jow Williams may have played his final Barnsley match as the loan midfielder has returned to parent club Everton with an injury.

The 21-year-old, who had never played a senior match before joining the Reds on a season-long loan last summer, played more minutes anyone else at the club in the first half of the season but suspensions and injuries have restricted him in recent months. Williams – who has made 38 appearances for Barnsley, scoring a stunning long-range volley at Burton Albion in October – sustained the latest muscle injury after coming on as a substitute against Bristol City two weeks ago today. He is back at the Premier League club for treatment and has an outside chance of returning for Barnsley's last matches of the season.

His fellow central midfielder George Moncur also missed Tuesday's loss at Ipswich Town due to illness, after right-back Jason McCarthy was sick for the previous game – but head coach Jose Morais insists the two cases are not linked and there is no bug going around Oakwell. Assistant Dimas said yesterday that Moncur has 'totally recovered' so Barnsley could return to the 4-3-3 formation they have mainly used under Morais before changing to 4-4-2 in Moncur's absence in midweek.

Barnsley's worries at left-back have been eased as Dimas said Zeki Fyers, who limped off at Ipswich, only had cramp while Dani Pinillos is back in training. Centre-back Matt Mills and striker Mamadou Thiam have also returned to training following injuries. Goalkeeper Nick Townsend is out for the season after breaking a finger in a training ground altercation with defender Dimitri Cavare.
