A THURGOLAND pensioner has died after a motorway crash in Derbyshire which left her husband critically injured.

Derbyshire Police are now investigating the incident, which happened on the southbound carriageway of the M1 south of junction 29 on Saturday.

Elizabeth Harrison, 88, of Roper Lane, Thurgoland, was taken to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield by air ambulance, but died.

Her husband Roy, 90, was also taken to hospital, where he remains in a critical condition.

It is understood one of the couple’s children had been on a visit to the UK from their home in Spain for the festive period, with the couple travelling to see another of their children when the collision occurred.

According to Derbyshire Police, Mrs Harrison had been a rear seat passenger in a Nissan Qashqai at the time of the crash.
