POLICE are treating the incident which saw much of the town centre put into ‘lockdown’ this morning as attempted murder.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman confirmed a 28-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of attempted murder remains in police custody. The woman is currently being assessed from a ‘mental health perspective’, the force said.

Assistant Chief Constable Tim Forber said: “The investigation has continued to develop at pace throughout the day and continues to be led by South Yorkshire Police major investigation team as is normal for a serious offence such as this.

“High visibility patrols will remain in place throughout today to offer reassurance but Barnsley town centre remains open for business.

“I’d like to thank the public for their patience and reiterate the need for anyone who was in Barnsley town centre this morning and may have witnessed the incident to call 101 quoting incident number 246 of September 8.”
