A WOMAN struck in the face by debris during a firework display in Penistone says she is lucky she didn’t lose an eye.

Geraldine Sykes was among about 2,500 people who attended the Penistone bonfire, organised by Penistone Round Table on Saturday night.

She was struck in the face by what she believes was part of a firework. Geraldine was treated in the first aid tent at the event and later went to A and E.

A spokesman for Penistone Round Table said: “We were sorry to hear of her injury. We have successfully organised the community bonfire for a number of years and any incidents are very rare. We are committed to ensuring that this event is safe year on year.”
