WOMBWELL’S neighbourhood police are encouraged by falling crime figures following a concentrated effort to clampdown on incidents in the town.
Three shoplifting offences were reported to police in the last four weeks, PCSO Tony Thorpe told Friday’s PACT meeting at Berneslai Homes, Shipcroft Close.
Across the period, police logged 19 incidents of various types - from night-time disturbances through to people concerned for others’ safety - on High Street.
PCSO Thorpe said police had been doing ‘a lot of work behind the scenes’ on the crime hotspot.
“Having looked at previous figures those are quite low for the High Street,” he added.
“Unless the stores aren’t reporting it, in my opinion those are low figures for shoplifting, having done these figures for the last seven years.”
Wombwell Coun Robert Frost said: “We have seen a good police presence on High Street, and positive effects in terms of a decrease in incidents.
“As the neighbourhood policing team are becoming more embedded, it’s slowly getting back to how it was.”
Police also recorded two motor vehicle thefts from Bondfield Crescent and Park Street, four thefts from motor vehicles, four burglaries from dwellings and two from commercial premises - namely Mydentist on George Street and the vacant Wombwell Wines on High Street.
One suspicious vehicle stolen from the Sheffield area was also recovered on Washington Avenue.
