HIGHWAYS England have come up with two alternative schemes for improving the Woodhead Pass road link between Barnsley and Manchester, which could involve the A61 at Tankersley being turned into a dual carriageway.

There are two proposals for Tankersley, which would either leave gaps in the central reservation or closing the gaps up.

Part of the A61 is already a dual carriageway, with a filter lane and opening opposite New Road, which would disappear if the Highways Agency opted to close the gaps on the road.

Other proposed changes for the roads on this side of the Pennines include the use of two overtaking lanes on the A628 near Salters Brook bridge and Woodhead bridge.

Other changes proposed are on the Manchester side of Woodhead.

They could include a new Mottram Moor link road, a dual carriageway which would run from the M67 terminal roundabout to a junction on the A57 at Mottram Moor.

There will be a consultation event at Tankersley Welfare Hall on Wednesday, from noon to 6pm.

That is the only one of five being scheduled, but more detailed information is available at Penistone and Stocksbridge libraries, Bank View cafe at Langsett, Tankersley Post Office and Barnsley Central Library.
