Cauley Woodrow is delighted to have scored in both Barnsley’s games this week and is hoping to add to his tally of three goals this season in the near future.
The 24-year-old striker is the only player to have netted more than once for the Reds this season, after a long-range stunner in Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Brentford then a scrambled injury-time leveller against Derby County on Wednesday. Head coach Daniel Stendel spoke to Woodrow last week about his goals return and the former England under 21 star reacted.
Woodrow told the Chronicle: “I am not going to put all the pressure on myself and say it’s just up to me to score, because it’s a team game. But the gaffer spoke to me last week and said he thought I could be doing a little bit more so to get two in two is good. Getting goals is my job on the pitch. Hopefully now a few have gone in, some more will start coming. We have created a lot better chances in the last few games because, before, we weren’t creating many.”
Woodrow’s goal on Wednesday, which bounced in off his calf, was very different to the two long-range strikes he netted against Brentford and Charlton Athletic. He said: "That kind of goal from close range is what you want to be scoring as a striker. Tongie (coach Dale Tonge) said to me the other week that the staff don’t care how it goes in.
“My previous two were good finishes from far away but I will take them however they come. It was good to score, especially after the first half when two good chances didn’t go in for me.”
Woodrow claimed the equaliser against the Rams after he diverted in a shot by Conor Chaplin which was going wide and is looking forward to the game at Preston North End tomorrow. He said: “I didn’t know too much about it but I knew it was my goal. The main thing is we got a point, which we probably deserved overall, and we can go into the weekend before the international on a high and hopefully get something at Preston.
“They are a good team near the top of the table but I think it’s a game that will suit us because it’s not a very big atmosphere and the pitch is nice. I am sure we can cause them some problems.”
Woodrow is likely to come up against his former Barnsley team-mate Brad Potts who was sold to Preston in January. He said: “Brad is a good lad, I played with him for a little while. “It will be good to see him and play against him, hopefully.”
