Cauley Woodrow admits he would have been happy with five league goals at this stage of the season at the start but is now focused on correcting his side’s position in the league table.

The 24-year-old striker has netted almost half of Barnsley’s 11 goals, while no one else has scored more than one for the last-placed Reds, and only ten players have netted more than him in the Championship this season.

After his brace in Tuesday’s 2-2 draw at leaders West Bromwich Albion,  Woodrow told the Chronicle: “I would have been happy with five goals at this point. It’s my job to score goals so I am pleased on a personal note. I had some chances against Swansea (on Saturday) and I was disappointed but at West Brom they fell for me and I was delighted.”

Woodrow hit the bar at 2-0. He said: “I have never scored a hat-trick before and, when I saw it going in the air, I was thinking it might be time to get one but it wasn’t to be.”

Barnsley have drawn against high-flying duo Swansea and West Brom this week, ahead of tomorrow’s trip to fellow strugglers Huddersfield Town. Woodrow said: “We played two of the better teams in the league and got points so now we have to play the teams who aren’t at the top of the table like Huddersfield and, if we perform like we have been, then I am sure we will get the win we are looking for. It’s a local derby and we will go there for a win. We’re not not confident, we have a lot of belief and feel positive.”

Woodrow believes his partnership with Conor Chaplin up front will be crucial.  He told the Chronicle: “Chaps is a really good player and a nice lad. The more you play with someone, the more you get an understanding. That has shown in the last games. He did unbelievably for our goal against Swansea after I flicked it to him. We’re getting to know where each other is on the pitch. He’s quite jinky and can get in good areas.”

Daniel Stendel, the head coach in charge when Woodrow arrived at Barnsley last year, left the club earlier this month with first team coach Adam Murray replacing him as caretaker.  Woodrow said: “It’s been a fresh start for everyone. It wasn’t a big shock and Muz has fitted in nicely. He has put a little bit more structure into us and made us hard to break down because previously we were being broken down quite easily.  As long as we are set up right, like we are, we have some really good players and we are proving that now. He’s a good motivator. Muz has been a manager before and understands what we need out on the pitch. I really like him and he’s done really well.”
