FAST food giant McDonald’s has confirmed construction of a new restaurant on the edge of the town centre will start this summer.

Planning permission was granted late last year for the new restaurant opposite Morrison’s off Westway, and demolition contractors have spent the last few weeks pulling down the old Gala Bingo hall, previously Delta Bowl bowling alley, to make way for it.

Demolition is now virtually complete and a McDonald’s spokesman said construction of the new restaurant is imminent. It will be in addition to its nearby Old Mill Lane site, and others at Stairfoot and Tankersley.

“We can confirm that we have received planning permission for a new restaurant in Barnsley,” the spokesman said.

“We are aiming to start work on-site this summer and believe the new restaurant will bring investment to the local community as well as creating at least 65 new full and part-time jobs.”
