THE average full-time worker in Barnsley needs a staggering 26 per cent pay rise to afford a mortgage on a typical home, a new report from the National Housing Federation reveals.

According to the ‘Yorkshire and the Humber Home Truths 2016/17’ report, those earning less than £29,809 a year are now priced out of buying the average home in the area.

Despite regional house prices being lower than the national average, the combination of low wages, an above-average unemployment rate and job insecurity is resulting in an acute housing crisis.

Local salaries have failed to keep up with house prices, meaning the average home in Barnsley costing £130,413 is now more than five and a half times the average yearly income of £23,670.
