WORTLEY is to get its small screen debut when the new ITV drama Jericho premieres.

Remote farmland in the Barnsley village forms the dramatic backdrop for the flagship show - dubbed a British Western - which stars Call the Midwife’s Jessica Raine, The Tudors’ Hands Matheson and Clarke Peters from The Wire.

The prime-time Thursday night show has been created by Steve Thompson, of Sherlock and Doctor Who fame, and is set in the Yorkshire Dales in the 1870s.

Inspired by a true story, it focuses on the shanty town of Jericho, home to a community that will live, thrive and die in the shadow of the viaduct they have been brought together to build.

Steven said building the town of Jericho in Wortley was an extraordinary moment in his career, watching the stunning transformation from farmland to shanty town in a matter of months.
