A PENISTONE Young Farmers’ Club member has been named runner-up in the UK’s best young butcher competition.

Dan Binns, 19, travelled down to Birmingham NEC to collect his trophy at the Premier Young Butcher Competition.

The competition is organised by the National Federation of Meat and Food Traders and has six categories which test the contestants’ craft skills over four hours.

Dan is currently on an apprenticeship with J Brindon in Holmfirth while attending Leeds City College. He has loved farming since he was very young. He used to help out on the farm near his home in Skelmanthorpe, Huddersfield and got a Saturday job in a butcher’s shop when he was 13.

He was encouraged to join young farmers by a colleague and hopes to continue his successes in competition.

“I’m hoping to get onto the England butchery team,” Dan said.

“England has a butchery team just like it has a rugby or any other sporting team. The international competitions are amazing with the opportunity to travel to places like Singapore.”

In the future, Dan’s dream is to rear livestock on his own land and sell the meat in his own shop.
