THEY are best pals who go to the same school, are in the same class and sit next to each other on the same table.

They’re also swimmers who won all their races and finished as top boy and top girl at Stocksbridge Pentaqua Open Gala.

Louie Ennis and Gabrielle Idle-Beavers, both nine, swim for Stocksbridge Pentaqua and competed in six and seven events respectively at the competition at Ponds Forge.

Louie finished first in the 50m back stroke, freestyle, butterfly and breast stroke and also in the 100m freestyle and back stroke for his age range.

Gabrielle finished first in the 50m breast stroke, butterfly, back stroke and freestyle, and also the 100m breast stroke, back stroke and freestyle for her age range.

It meant they also won the awards for top boy and top girl.

In the 100m freestyle, Gabrielle broke the Yorkshire record and is the fastest nine-year-old in Yorkshire since records began, and is the fastest in the UK for 100m front crawl long course. Gabrielle also broke her own records in the 50m and 100m breast stroke.

Her mum Nicola, of Bence Lane, Darton, said: “I couldn’t believe it when they both won. It’s a lot of events to do in a single day competition.

“I’m so proud of Gabrielle.”

Louie’s dad Dale, 45, of Highbury Way, Barnsley, said Louie had been swimming for just 18 months.

He said: “I’m in awe of him. I’ve swam against him and I can’t beat him. The time he put in for the 100m freestyle was the fastest in Yorkshire recorded for a nine-year-old this year. We are so proud of him and his achievements.”
