A TEAM of young entrepreneurs from a Barnsley secondary school made their mark at the I Know I Can Big Challenge competition, winning the award for best product design.

The local enterprise event run by Barnsley Council challenged pupils from primary and secondary schools across the area to develop and run their own businesses.

At Barnsley Academy, more than 90 year ten students took part over a six-month period, with three teams making it through to the finals at Barnsley Civic, where they had to pitch their ideas to a Dragon’s Den style panel of judges.

Receiving the Product Design Award was Crate-Ives - a quintet comprising Amalie Perry, Laura Pere, Lucy Clarke, Jared Markey and Tori Fairbairn - who produced their own hand decorated boxes and crates.

Also attending the finals were Ashleigh Jackson, Tawana Chapanduka and Holly Bedford, who donated the profits from their Make and Shake milkshake business, and Teneka Bryant, who produced drawings and anima illustrations with her business, Scribble Art.

Julie Broomhead, head of business and computing at Barnsley Academy, said:

“A big well done to all of our extremely talented and hardworking finalists - they’re a real credit to Barnsley Academy and a great inspiration to all of us.”
