HUNDREDS of young people flocked to an event aimed at showcasing what Barnsley has to offer.

Held at the Metrodome, the annual Ambition Barnsley welcomed students from across the borough - all keen to see the range of options and career pathways for the future.

Colleges, training providers and a whole range of employers including Barnsley College, Barnsley FC, the British Army, Royal Air Force, NHS and leading local industry employers offered their time to spotlight the opportunities available.

The event, organised by Barnsley Council’s young people service, ‘I Know I Can’ continues to grow, this year including virtual reality technology, dance and music performances, and even a live radio studio.

Student journalists from Horizon Community College also gained experience reporting live on the day.

They welcomed the Mayor of Barnsley, Coun Steve Green, who was invited to chat with students and see some of the interactive workshops taking place.

A total of 385 students attended, with 800 young people, parents and carers at the evening session, and 67 providers and employers offering the chance to try out different skills and find out more about employment and different pathways open to them such as academic, vocational courses and apprenticeships.

Coun Roy Miller, Cabinet spokesman for place, said: “This was another fantastic event and a big thank you to all the providers and employers who make this event a success.

“It’s great to see so many young people attending each year, asking questions and considering the range of exciting options available to them in the future.”
