PUPILS at a Barnsley school got the chance to have a kick-about with one of their footballing heroes.

Burton Road Primary School was visited by Barnsley FC player Mike Bahre, who spoke to pupils and answered their most pressing questions about life as a professional footballer - and the German midfielder even joined the kids on their lunch break for a quick game and to sign autographs.

“I really enjoyed it,” said Mike, 23, who joined the Reds last Summer from German side Hannover 96. “I remember when I was a kid and when I heard about a professional footballer visiting I couldn’t sleep the night before.

“I can remember when I was a kid, I had so many questions but I was too shy to ask the questions to the guys.

“I don’t think they really know how it is to be a professional and what you have to do to be a professional footballer. It’s a good feeling for me and for the kids as well.”

Burton Road are one of many local schools who partake in the Primary Stars programme, a scheme which helps to promote education through the pull of professional football clubs and sport.

Michael Woodhall, school sports coach, said: “It’s going really well, the kids have loved it. It’s been fun and engaging.

“They’ve learnt lots of new skills and lots of respect lessons which have really helped.”
